Units & Bankroll Management Explained
What is a unit?
A unit is a fixed stake size that you define yourself. A common choice is one per cent of your betting bankroll. If you have set aside €500 for betting, one unit equals €5. When we recommend a tip at 2 units, you stake €10.
The advantage: units make results comparable regardless of bankroll size. A profit of +10 units means €50 for someone betting €5 per unit and €200 for someone betting €20 per unit.
Our 1 to 5 staking scale
- 1 unit: solid view, normal risk or higher odds
- 2 units: good data, clear edge
- 3 units: very convincing analysis
- 4–5 units: rare cases with an exceptionally clear picture
High stakes are rare. Most of our tips are 1 or 2 units.
What is a bankroll?
Your bankroll is money reserved exclusively for betting – separate from rent, bills and savings. It should be an amount you could lose entirely without affecting your life.
Why bankroll management matters
Good tips lose too. At odds around 1.90, losing runs of five or more are completely normal. Stakes that are too large cannot survive such a phase. At one to two per cent per bet, your bankroll stays stable even through bad spells.
Staking plans
Flat staking
Every bet gets the same stake. Simple and robust – ideal for beginners.
Graded staking
The stake reflects confidence, like our 1–5 scale. This requires discipline in rating each bet.
Percentage staking
The stake is a percentage of the current bankroll, so stakes grow and shrink automatically.
Avoid progressions
Systems such as doubling the stake after a loss eventually lead to huge stakes and can wipe out the bankroll.
Understanding the numbers
- Profit in units: total wins minus losses
- Yield: profit divided by total amount staked, in per cent
- Hit rate: share of winning bets – only meaningful alongside average odds
A high hit rate at low odds can be worth less than a lower hit rate at higher odds. What counts is yield over a long period.
Practical rules
- Set your unit size once and only adjust it calmly
- Record every bet
- Never raise stakes out of frustration
- Take breaks when betting stops being fun
