Value Bets Explained
What is a value bet?
A value bet exists when the odds on offer are higher than they should be given the real probability of the outcome. Odds are the bookmaker's price for an event. If that price is wrong in your favour, you have an edge.
Converting odds into probabilities
The implied probability of decimal odds is 1 divided by the odds. Odds of 2.00 equal 50 per cent, 1.50 about 67 per cent, 3.00 about 33 per cent.
Example with hypothetical numbers: a player is priced at 2.20, implying roughly 45 per cent. If your careful analysis puts their chances at 52 per cent, the bet has value. At 40 per cent it would not – even though it might still win.
The bookmaker's margin
Add the implied probabilities of both players and you get more than 100 per cent. The excess is the margin. To win long term, your edge must exceed it. That is why comparing odds matters: small differences add up over many bets.
Where value comes from in tennis
- Underrated surface form, such as clay specialists early in the clay season
- Overreactions to single results
- Missing information on fitness or workload
- Popular names whose prices are pushed down by public money
- Challenger and ITF matches, where markets are less efficient
Value and variance
Value does not guarantee a win on any single bet. A value bet with a 52 per cent chance still loses almost half the time. The edge only shows over a large number of bets, which is why bankroll management and patience matter.
Closing line value
A good indicator is the closing price. If you take 2.10 and the match starts at 1.90, the market has moved towards your view. Regularly beating the closing line usually means you are working with a genuine edge.
Common mistakes
- Treating winning bets as good bets by default
- Confusing high odds with value
- Treating short odds as safe
- Drawing conclusions from a handful of bets
Summary
- Value = odds higher than true probability
- Compare odds to reduce the margin
- Judge yourself on process and closing line, not single results
